Early years and Study
Winning a painting competition was perhaps the deciding factor in determining
the career of London born artist EJ Pritchard. She was aged six!
Full time art study further fueled her ambition, introducing her to varied influences,
from late 19th and 20th Century masters (pioneers of now widely accepted techniques)
ranging from the vigorous, expressive canvases of Frank Auerbach, to the powerful simplicity and stark contrasts of Edward Hopper.
She graduated from the University of Northumbria with Honours.
Creative Career
Many creative ventures followed, including art teaching and community carnivals -
to developing government creative industry strategies. Pursuing her passion lead her to open her own art gallery in Leeds.
For several years she exhibited and sold original art works by over 100 up and coming artists from all over the UK and beyond.
Themes
Needing to concentrate more fully on her own painting, she struggled to define a 'signature' theme or style,
hence painted everything from large abstract canvases to portrait commissions -
from still life to urban architecture and the nude. Out of this, the cityscape became a recurring theme.
Cityscape
She was clearly drawn to the vibrancy and energy, the constant change and the possibilities offered -
people, buildings, movement and transportation. Rapid changes in light and tempo -
whether from rooftop skyline or a populated street scene. Attempting to capture something of its energy and drama -
perhaps the city afforded more scope for her developing expressive style.
The work on the site is by no means exhaustive, and represents a selection of the cityscape themes.
She continues to paint other themes. Please enquire if you would like to see other works.
Her work is collected wherever it is shown, currently in Europe and the US.
Many pieces on this website are new and have never been previously exhibited.
